Transcript - WordPress Tutorial – How To Install A WordPress Theme Through The WordPress Dashboard.

Hey Gang, This is Mika Kaltoft from Col323WebDesign.com.

In this quick tutorial, I will be teaching you how to install a WordPress Theme to your WordPress website. It is very easy, so let us get started.

First, go ahead and open your favorite internet browser and then go to google. (Go to the URL bar and type: www.google.com and click enter.)

Once you arrive at google, go to the google search bar and type in: WordPress Themes and click enter.

As you can see from the search result, there is a ton of WordPress Themes. Some of them you can buy and some you can download for free. (YEAH, everyone likes free stuff!!) We are going to the WordPress directory of themes where you can find Free WordPress Themes.

Here you can see the many different themes, so lets just choose the first theme and click download. It will take a few seconds to download.

Once it’s downloaded, go to the URL bar again and type in your WordPress website login information [www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin]. Go ahead and type in those information and click Log In.

Now you are logged in to your WordPress dashboard and from here, it is very simple. Go to the left sidebar, hover over Appearance and in the fly-out menu click on the link named Themes.

When you arrive at the next page, you will  see all your current installed themes, but for now, go up to the top of the screen, where it says Install Themes and click on that link.

Then, click on the upload link. Now, you can see the folder needs to be in a zip format, so before we can upload the file, we are going to find the the WordPress theme we downloaded and make it a .zip file. If you are a Mac user, just right click on the folder and click on “Compress (folders name)” and there you go, it has now created a zip file. Then go back to your WordPress screen and click choose file. Find the folder located on your desktop and then  click on it once and then click on the Choose button in the button once.

Now you can see that the file is read to be uploaded. Go ahead and click Install Now.

It may take a few minutes to upload the file, it all depend on the themes size. Sometimes the theme is big, like 10 mb, 20mb or 30mb, so have patience while it’s being uploaded.

Now the Theme is installed successfully. You can actually preview how your website is going to look before you activate the it, but I’m just going to click Activate since this tutorial is about how to install a theme.

There you go, now you can see the Current Theme is the theme we have installed. You can also see all the options, some themes have different options and functions, which we will get in to later in some tutorials, so for now lets just visit the website and see how it looks.

Our website now has a new theme that is ready to be used, edited and tested.

Older HTML WebPages can take a long time to design because if anything needs to be changed it also needs to be changed on all other pages of the site. In order to change an item on your menu bar, for example, you would need to go through and manually change that item on all the pages on the site for that change to be seen completely. This is a time consuming process, which make it a more costly option.

WordPress is a solution to this problem. It automatically includes the changes you make with the design, and then implements it to all of the pages on the site. It also has quick design options for headers, footers, and sidebar settings, which make it easy for us as web designers to create a site quickly. If you want your site up and running fast, WordPress is one of your best options.

Self-Updating

WordPress has built in features that allow your site to automatically install any updates or upgrades to the system. Unlike other systems where you might have to manually update the coding or system, WordPress will do it routinely for you.

Easy to Use

One of the best advantages that WordPress offers is that it is not difficult to navigate. Website owners can sign on to WordPress and edit information, update pictures, or post blog posts all from a site dashboard. WordPress is easy to install, and you can get your site up and working quickly. Setting up the WordPress application on your website is fast and straightforward, which is a welcome option for those who are not familiar with web software.

Third Party Apps as Plug-ins

You can add a lot of great third party applications as plug-ins to your site, including a calendar of all business events, picture galleries, social media buttons, and much more.

Blogging

WordPress is a great option for blogging. Blogs allow businesses to write about any subject, and also give their customers a forum where they can leave feedback and comments. The more often you have content on your site, the better your site will do on search engines, and the more people will be able to see your site. Blog writing is useful with search engine optimization.

Transcript - Learn How To Update WordPress In Less Than 2 Min.

In this quick WordPress Tutorial I’ll be showing you How To Update WordPress (in less than 2 min). It’s very simple, so lets get started.

First of all, you will need to find your favorite internet browser and open a window. Then, you go up to your URL bar and type in your login information [www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin] and ‘click enter’.
Next, you need to type in your username and password and ‘click login’.

Now we have arrived at the WordPress Dashboard and as you can see, the WordPress 3.3 is available for update. So what we will do, is basically to click ‘Please update now’. We are redirected to the update page, where we will click on the “Update Automatically button”

And, WordPress is now completely update.

Hey guys! This is Mika Kaltoft from Col323WebDesign.com.

Today is a great day in the WordPress community because the new WordPress 3.3 update is available for download. In this quick video, I’m going to show you some of the features and highlights from the new update.

UPDATE WORDPRESS

The first step is obviously to update WordPress, so we are going to click on Please update now and then click Update Automatically.

Now we are being redirected to a Welcome to WordPress 3.3 page, where we can see; What’s New, Credits and Freedoms. If we scroll down, we can read about what’s new, but in this video I will give you a quick run through.

TOP MENU BAR

First of all, you can see in the top-menu/menubar that the color has changed a little bit and some  functions as well. Now for example, in order for you to logout you, you have to go and hover over Howdy and your Images (in the right-top-corner) and then go down to Log Out. You can also Edit Your [My] Profile here.

Another thing is the + New. This is fold-down option, where you can get redirected to a Post, Media, Link, Page or User page by a single click. If you have any comments, you can respond to them by clicking at the Speech Bubble Logo. If there is any any new updates, you can go to the update page by clicking on the Two Circled Arrows. If you want to visit your site (Homepage) you can click on your title or your domain url and finally, the WordPress Logo shows you the options to send feedback, get help, or to go to the support forum etc.

MENU BAR

Next, we are going to be looking at the left menu bar, which has had some remodeling done. As you can see, now, instead of the links being stacked under each other, there is now a fly-out menu.

It works really well because, as you may remember from before the update, it was easy having installed plugins lined up under each other, leading you to scroll down to find exactly what you needed. However, now everything is more centered, so whenever you need a function, you can just go in and find it straight away. It’s very simple and very fast. I really like this function.

 MEDIA UPLOAD

Another new feature is in the media section, where they have updated and added a new function that is really cool. In order for me to show you how it works, I need to go to Post and then click on Add New.

First of all, you will see that there is a pop-up window, which basically explains you what is new. I’m just going to Dismiss the window. There is usual 4 or 5 icons in the Upload/Insert Section, but now there is only one icon which says Add Media (when you hover over it) The WordPress Developers have removed all the other icons and left one option available to add media files.

When clicking on this Upload/Insert Icon, we can see that there is a brand new panel, where you can drag and drop files - in the center of the pop-up window. You can obviously still do it in the old why, where you click Select Files and find the file you need, even through, no one can ever find the file anyway–so I really like this new function because it makes life much easier.

In order for me to show you how it works, I’m going to drag in a WordPress Image and drop it in the center of the pop-up window. Once it’s uploaded, I click Inset To Post and wola. (it’s good to go)

 IPAD EXCITEMENT & IMPROVEMENT

Antother great feature I just have to mentor is for all you IPAD users. If you have used your IPAD to edit a post/page on WordPress, you have seen that the editing was in HTML. It’s was very confusion at times, even though you have webmaster skills and are good at HTML/CSS. I’ve actually not used my IPAD much to do many updates because it has been to complicated. All that said, you now have the option to see either Visual or HTML which is great. The menu bar works great as well. It’s very elegant and very easy to use and makes the whole experience of using your IPAD to update your content much more comfortable and awesome. So that is one thing that I’m sure you will be stoked about.

Hey!!

This is Mika Kaltoft from Col323WebDesign.com. In this quick tutorial I’ll be teaching you how to login and log out of your WordPress Dashboard. It is very simple!

The first step is to find your favorite internet browser and open a window. Once you have done that,  you go and type in the URL for your WordPress Website.

I’ll be using my “www.col323webdesign.com/test” site for this purpose. (Make sure there is a /  after your .com or .org.) Then type in; wp-admin. Once Again, type in wp-admin after the / and click enter. [ it will look something like this: www.your-domain.com/wp-admin ]

Now you will be redirected to your WordPress Login Area. You are now going to type in your username and password.
You can choose the option of ‘Remember Me’ so you don’t need to do this every time you login or if you have lost your password, you can have it send to your email.

For this purpose, let’s just mark; ‘Remember Me’ and then click ‘Login’.

And there you go, we are now logged in to the WordPress Dashboard. Here you have it! Once, you want to log out you, just click ‘Log Out’ in the right top corner.

Here is the WordPress Tutorial – Step by step:

1. Login into your Cpanel (use the login information provided by your hosting company)
2. Once you arrive at your Cpanel, find the blue smily icon with the Fantastico De Luxe link below and click on it.
3. Find and click on the WordPress link on the left sidebar.
4. In the center of this new page, you will find a link named: “New Installation: -> click on it.
5. Next, you’ll be starting the process of installing WordPress.

Install WordPress (1/3)

• INSTALLATION LOCATION

1. Install a domain: Choose a domain where you want the WordPress installation on to be shown.
2. Install in directory: Keep this field blank unless you are going to install another WordPress instillation on your current domain.

•  ADMIN ACCESS DATA - You are now going to choose your login username and password.

1. Administrator-username (you need this to enter the protected admin area: Choose a username (I alway use admin by default)
2. Password (you need this to enter the protected admin area): Choose a password

NOTE: Write these information down. You will need them to login to your WordPress Dashboard.

• BASE CONFIGURATION - You can edit these information from your WordPress Dashboard.

1. Admin nickname: Enter Your Nickname
2. Admin e-mail (your email address): Enter your Email
3. Site name: Enter your Site Name
4. Description: Enter a Description

Finally, check that your information is correct and click on the: “Install WordPress” button

Install WordPress (2/3)

On this page your MySQL will be created. The only thing you need to do on this page is to click on the “Finish Installation” button.

Install WordPress (3/3)

Your installation is now complete. Remember to save this url: http://your-domain.com/wp-admin/ . It will direct you to the your WordPress Login Area, where you can login to your WordPress Dashboard and to setup your website.
